Protecting your discount
The only way to protect your discount on the Claim-Rated
Scale when you are responsible for a crash is to repay the claim.
Repaying a claim
If you are deemed at fault in a claim that doesn't
involve a lot of money, you may be better off to repay the claim
so that it doesn't affect your rating on the CRS or your RoadStar
status. Your adjuster can show you how much difference an at-fault
claim will make to your premiums. Then you can decide whether you
are better off to repay the claim or to pay increased premiums.
CAUTION: ICBC advises that you do NOT attempt
to settle claims independently with another motorist. Doing so may
void your insurance coverage.
NOTE: You must repay your claim before it affects
your insurance renewal premium. For more information on this option,
call Customer Contact at 604-661-2800 or toll-free at 1-800-663-3051.
Regaining your discount
Each year of claim-free driving after your at-fault
claim will help you move one level back towards a discount position.
If you are at a surcharge position for 3 years in a row without
an at-fault claim, you will automatically return to the base rate.
If you are in a discount position after
an at-fault claim, 3 consecutive years of claim-free driving will
restore you to the level you had reached on the Claim-Rated Scale
before your claim. If you have more than one claim, you will be
restored to the level you were at before your most recent claim.
