Learning to drive safely takes time

For new drivers, the risk of being in a crash is very real. That's why we've taken a good thing - the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) - and made it even better.

In its first three years, GLP reduced the new driver crash rate by 16 per cent. But most of the crash reductions came from the longer learner stage, when new drivers have a supervisor.

Novice drivers were still 45% more likely to crash than more experienced drivers. And those crashes tended to be more severe, with 1 in 4 of the collisions involving GLP drivers resulting in an injury or fatality.

The October 2003 changes to GLP gave new drivers the time they need to practice safe driving skills and attitudes - and do it with less risk.
