Escalating deductibles

Customers with multiple Comprehensive claims may have to pay higher deductibles. Here's how they work.

What's an escalating deductible?

It is the deductible offered to some customers when they have more than the average number of Comprehensive claims. It ranges from $500 to $2,500. In rare cases, customers may be denied the option to purchase Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage.

Why a higher deductible

Our customers have told us they don't want to share the costs of drivers who have frequent comprehensive claims. To be fair, customers who have more claims pay more of the claims costs. Protect yourself and your vehicle and keep more money in your pocket by following these tips:

  • Auto crime - Use an anti-theft device and remove items in your vehicle from sight.

  • Animal collisions - Watch for highway warning signs and slow down. Be extra cautious at dawn or dusk. More on reducing the risks of wildlife collision.

  • Windshield damage - Always keep a safe distance behind vehicles and let passing vehicles pass you quickly.

  • Windshield repairs - Sometimes a windshield can be safely repaired instead of replaced. Windshield repairs are now covered under your Comprehensive coverage without the need to pay a deductible.

Cost of insurance goes down

As your deductible goes up, your insurance premium will actually go down. You will only pay the higher deductible if you have more comprehensive losses.

How will I be notified?

How you find out about an escalating deductible depends on your circumstances:

you have had two or more claims over two years*we will print a warning note on the bottom of your renewal reminder.
you are going to be affected by an increased deductiblewe will notify you by letter before your next renewal.
you have an escalated comprehensive deductible and you purchase or lease another vehiclediscuss your options with your Autoplan broker.

*Note: Windshield repair claims will not have an impact on customers' claims history or future deductible amounts.

When can I apply for a review?

After three years, however we may review it sooner if you

  • can show that you made a significant, relevant change that has stopped your claims and
  • continue to have no claims for at least one full year.
