How your Optional coverage affects your premiums

Your total Autoplan premium is affected by any additional Optional coverage you choose to buy. The more Optional coverage you purchase, the higher your premium will be.

Basic Autoplan provides the minimum required insurance to be on the road in British Columbia. Optional coverage lets you increase your coverage to suit your needs.

ICBC offers many types of Optional coverage in addition to providing Basic Autoplan. For example:

Your deductible

Your deductible is the amount you pay in the event of a claim before ICBC covers the rest. The lower the deductible, the more your insurance will cost. Your broker can provide quotes on how different deductible amounts will affect your premiums.

Glossary
  • Your risk of being sued by someone: in legal terms, some third "party" in addition to you (first party) and your insurer (second party). When someone talks about a third-party claim against you, that means you are being sued by a person who holds you responsible for injuring them or damaging their property. The person suing can be your own passenger in a crash you caused. The damage you cause to another person - the third party - is covered under Third Party Liability insurance.
