If the initials SRS appear on the steering wheel or dash, you have a Supplemental Restraint System or air bag in front of you. In a few vehicles, the steering wheel or dashboard is marked SIR which stands for Supplemental Inflatable Restraint. This also means there's an air bag. If you have purchased, or are planning to purchase a used car, make sure you check to ensure it has an air bag.

Frontal air bags are located in the steering wheel hub and in the passenger dashboard. All new passenger cars, light trucks and vans are equipped with frontal air bags.

Recently, side air bags have been installed in certain newer models of Ford, Saab, Volvo, Lexus, Mercedes, BMW and Audi vehicles. Side air bags are designed to provide protection during side impacts and, in some vehicles, during rollover crashes. Side air bags and side curtains are mounted in the doors, seats or roof rails. If you have side air bags in your vehicle, read the owner's manual before installing child seats.
