Head Restraint Measuring Device
The HMRD is attached to the H-point machine,
and replicates the head position of the occupant. It is equipped with two probes
which measure head restraint:
- height
relative to the top of the occupant's head, and
- backset
- the distance between the back of the occupant's head and the front of the
head restraint.
Research shows that both of these measurements
are important in assessing a head restraint's ability to help reduce whiplash
injuries.
Crashworthiness evaluations are conducted by
several countries:
- Canada
(ICBC),
- USA
(The Insurance Institute for highway Safety),
- UK
(Thatcham Motor Insurance Research Centre), and
- Australia
(NRMA) to rate
the effectiveness of head restraints.
