Safety Equipment on Buses

School buses are designed to meet 35 federal and provincial standards. In addition to these standards, governments and school boards have adopted various measures for driver qualification and training, special rules of the road for school buses, and training for students.

Today's school buses have improved occupant protection, specifically, well-padded, compartmentalized seating. In addition, new buses are required to have increased body strength, improved windows and exits, safe fuel systems, a warning light system, and cross-view mirrors or sensors to monitor the area immediately in front of the bus. Extendible stop arms are optional.
