As of December 31, 1988, all new school
buses (either built in Canada or imported into the country) must
meet stringent passenger seating and crash protection standards.
On all new buses, protection is provided
by containing students in high-backed, heavily padded, closely spaced
seats. It's called "compartmentalization"
Injuries are kept to a minimum by seating occupants in a relatively
confined environment (less room to move in) and ensuring padding
is thick enough to absorb the pressures of impacts.
