Dealer vs. private sales
Car dealers
Whether you end up buying your car from a licensed car dealer or not, they're a good place to start your search. Here's why:
- They have a large selection that allows you to test drive a number of different models and makes in a relatively short time.
- It's a good way to compare prices and get an idea of market values.
- Registered licensed car dealers provide you with protection up to $20,000 against outstanding liens and stolen vehicles.
- They may provide protection against undeclared damage to the vehicle, or undeclared rebuilt vehicles, plus;
- when you buy a vehicle from a registered licensed car dealer you may receive a limited mechanical warranty.
Choosing a car dealer is an important decision, remember:
- It is wise to deal with a well-established, reputable and licensed car dealer.
- Ask friends if they can recommend a dealer, and
- Be sure to check out the dealer's business records with the Better Business Bureau.
Private sales
Many people purchase their used car through a private seller, believing they will get a better deal. And it is possible, however there are risks involved.
If you decide not to buy from a registered licensed car dealer, it is best to buy a car from a friend or family member or someone that is recommended or known to you.
Unlicensed dealers, or curbers should be avoided.
