Buying a new car
Steps to purchase
So you've decided to buy a new vehicle.
Seems straightforward enough, but wait...here are a number
of steps involved and questions you should ask. Here's a
handy list of steps to follow to ensure you get the vehicle
that's right for you.
1) Brainstorm. Think of all the vehicles you're interested in and write
them down. Now is the time to consider what you'll be using
the vehicle for, commuting, work, family.
 |
The type of vehicle you purchase
can affect your insurance costs. Ask your broker. |
2) Research. Use the Internet; ask friends, read consumer reports. Make
notes on all the vehicles you're interested in, including;
safety
features, price, resale values, fuel
consumption.
3) Cost. What exactly can you afford? Refer to your notes and see
how much each vehicle you like costs, chances are you'll
start narrowing down your choices here.
4) Lease
or Buy. Leasing has become a popular option for many
people.
5) Financing. Talk to your bank, or other financial institution. Determine
what kind of financing will be available to you.
6) Visit
and test. You should now have shortened your list
of vehicles best suited to your needs. Now comes the really
fun part...the test drives. First, find the nearest dealerships
in your area, you can do this by checking the Yellow Pages
or the Motor
Dealer Standards Association of BC. Second, take each
vehicle for a thorough test drive and take many notes so
you can refer back.
7) Negotiate. You've done you're research and you're ready to buy. You
have the power of knowledge to your advantage. Make sure
you get the features and warranty you want included in the
final price.
8) Possession. Once you take possession of your vehicle, before you drive
away make sure you do a thorough check that everything is
in order. Was the detail work done, is the spare tire where
it's supposed to be?
9) Enjoy! Now's the time you've been waiting for. Get out and enjoy
your new purchase and rest easy that you have done all the
research and got a vehicle that is right for you. Make sure
you keep up the maintenance and stay safe on the roads!
