Working out the settlement

Sally's benefit entitlements after she was injured in a car crash

 DISCLAIMER
This is a fictional example created to demonstrate ICBC's general approach in settling injury claims. However, every settlement is different, depending on the unique circumstances of each case.
Sally Trimble

Before the crash

Occupation: Secretary
Employment status before crash: Employed
Income: $475 per week, after taxes
Age at time of crash: 19
Hobbies: Volleyball and stamp collecting

The crash

Last winter, Sally was driving a 1978 Volkswagen Beetle that collided with a 1999 Toyota SUV when both vehicles attempted to change lanes on a busy downtown street.

The injuries

Category: Temporary
Mild whiplash injury. Sally's symptoms included complaints of pain in her neck and reduced range of motion in her neck and back.

Consequences of the crash

Immediately after the crash, Sally suffered severe headaches and was unable to work for five weeks. Her condition has since gradually improved and, today, she is once again enjoying volleyball and other active sports. She shows no other symptoms of injury.

The settlement

The benefits included in Sally's settlement depended upon whether she was found to be at fault for the crash that injured her — or not. Click on the buttons below to find out how her settlement would be affected in either case.

Depending on the circumstances of a crash — and how it affects individual people — ICBC settlements can vary widely.
