What if I can't work?

Do I need to apply for disability payments from Employment Insurance (EI)?

If you were employed, yes.

Employed people who are disabled in a motor vehicle crash may be eligible for up to 15 weeks of Employment Insurance sickness benefits.

So, if you are claiming ICBC wage loss benefits, you should apply for EI benefits immediately.

EI has a two-week waiting period before benefits begin. If you are disabled, ICBC benefits begin on the eighth day, and will cover you for the second week of the EI waiting period.

Once EI benefits begin, the amount you get from EI will be deducted from any accident benefits covering the same period.

What if I receive other disability benefits while I am off work?

Please inform your adjuster about any other disability payments to which you might be entitled. Other disability payments payable to you will be deducted from your ICBC Accident Benefits wage loss payments.

What if I was injured during the course of my employment?

If you are covered by Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) insurance, you are entitled to benefits from the WCB for lost income when you are unable to work because of a job-related injury.Job-related injuries can include those suffered in a crash, if you were working at the time of the crash. If you are eligible for WCB benefits, you cannot also receive ICBC benefits except for that portion of ICBC benefits that exceeds the amount of the WCB benefits.

Issues involving WCB and ICBC can be very complex. Your adjuster will further explain your situation.
