Auto theft: your vehicle has been stolen

Do I need to report to the police?

Yes.

Can I make a claim for my stolen vehicle?

If you purchased ICBC Autoplan Comprehensive or Specified Perils insurance you are covered by ICBC. And yes, you can make a claim.

Am I entitled to a rental vehicle?

If you have ICBC Comprehensive or Special Perils coverage - and your claim for theft is accepted - then ICBC will reimburse the expense of renting a substitute vehicle, hiring a taxi or using public transportation.

PLEASE NOTE: The maximum ICBC pays is $40 per day up to a total limit of $800. Coverage for alternate transportation expenses start 72 hours after the theft has been reported to the police.

If you've purchased Loss of Use insurance or the RoadStar Package, you can rent a vehicle as soon as required after the theft of your vehicle. Refer to your Owners Certificate [click for definition] for the daily and total limits of your Loss of Use Coverage.

What happens next?

Many stolen vehicles are recovered by the police. The police may only notify the owner of the vehicle, not ICBC, if it is recovered. So please contact your ICBC adjuster as soon as possible so arrangements can be made to have an estimate of damage made. Once the estimate is done, the vehicle can be repaired.
