Glass and windshield claims

If you have Comprehensive coverage, you are covered for a glass claim. There is no coverage for a glass claim under Specified Perils. Most glass claims may qualify for Glass Express Shop, a faster process to handle your claim.

What's the process?

Here is the process you can expect to go through for glass and windshield claims:

Stage Who... Does what...
1 Customer Reports to ICBC claim centre, or goes directly to a Glass Express shop.
2 Customer Pays a Comprehensive deductible for glass claim.

Stage 1: Reports to ICBC claim centre, or goes directly to a Glass Express shop

You will need to either:

The following table identifies when you can go to a Glass Express shop and when you should go to an ICBC claim centre.

Go to a Glass Express shop Go to an ICBC Claim Centre
You are covered for glass or windshield damage under Glass Express if the damage is caused by:
  • flying rocks or road debris striking and breaking your vehicle's windshield
  • break-ins
  • vandalism
Glass Express shops have been approved by ICBC to process glass claims. You don't need to phone ICBC or go to a claim centre first. These auto glass shops meet industry-leading standards for quality work and customer service. Trained technicians will ensure your auto glass is safely replaced.
Go to an ICBC claim centre for your glass or windshield claim if there is:
  • no Glass Express shop in your area
  • you have a Temporary Operation Permit
  • you have a Vehicle in Storage policy
In addition to your glass/windshield damage, there is also damage to:
  • headlights
  • tail lights
  • mirrors
  • sunroof or T-bar
  • more than one piece of glass
  • your vehicle is more than 20 years old

Glass claims for older vehicles

In rare cases, replacing the glass in an older vehicle is more costly than the vehicle is worth. ICBC usually declares this a writeoff. The glass shop will consult with ICBC in all cases to determine if the repairs can proceed. Find out more about writeoffs.

Windshield repairs

In some instances, a suitable alternative to windshield replacement is to repair the glass. The cost of a glass repair is not covered by your insurance. In most cases, the cost of a windshield repair is considerably less than your deductible. Your ICBC Glass Express facility can discuss with you the benefits and cost of glass repair.

Stage 2: Pays a Comprehensive deductible for glass claims

For glass claims, you will pay the Comprehensive deductible to the repair shop. The deductible is the amount you have to pay towards repairs or costs before your insurance kicks in to pay for the rest.
