Why take driving lessons?

Learning to drive isn’t easy. And even if your “coach” at home can put in the necessary time and effort, you could still pick up some unsafe habits.

A professionally-qualified instructor can help you

  • get comfortable handling a vehicle—gradually, with less risk—in all kinds of traffic and road conditions
  • gain the right skills (and attitude!) to drive safely
  • prepare for your Class 7 or Class 5 road test.

ICBC-approved driver training course

In many B.C. communities, an excellent course is available that’s designed especially for new drivers in our graduated licensing program (GLP).

Driving schools and instructors who teach this course must be approved by ICBC to do so.

The course, which is based on our mapping a safe course curriculum (PDF), aims to actively engage new drivers in learning in a fun, interactive way. It especially focuses on developing a safe, responsible attitude behind the wheel.

Topics covered include

  • avoiding risks like speeding and driving impaired
  • driver psychology
  • rules of the road
  • vehicle performance, and
  • vehicle-handling skills.

With the ICBC-approved (GLP) course, you get 32 hours of instruction, including at least 16 in-class and 12 practising on the road.

Bonus: less time in graduated licensing!

By successfully completing the ICBC-approved (GLP) course, you can also get

  • a six-month reduction in the novice stage of graduated licensing,* and
  • two credits towards your high school graduation.
