Upgrade your driver's licence

You can upgrade from a regular driver’s licence to an enhanced driver’s licence (EDL) any time.

How to get an enhanced driver's licence

You will need to reapply for an EDL each time you apply for a different class of driver's licence.

If your current licence expires within six months and you upgrade to an EDL, your new EDL will be valid for five years.

If your current licence expires more than six months from now, you can still upgrade to an EDL. However, if you do, your new EDL will have the same expiry date as your current licence. For example, if your licence expires in two years and you upgrade to an EDL now, the new EDL will still expire in two years. When it expires, you’ll have to reapply and pay the driver’s licence and EDL renewal fees again.
