Inverse Liability coverage
Inverse Liability coverage protects you
in the parts of Canada and the U.S. where the law won't let you
recover losses from a driver who causes a crash.
If you are in a crash in one of these areas,
Basic Autoplan will pay the cost of repairs of your vehicle, for
as much as the other driver was held responsible.
So if another driver was 75% at fault for
a crash that happened where you can't sue, your Inverse Liability
Coverage will pay for 75% of the repairs to your car. That's the
portion of your repairs that the other driver (or that driver's
insurance) would have had to pay for in British Columbia.
What is covered?
Inverse Liability coverage covers vehicle
damage, not injury or death.
It applies even if you do not carry Autoplan
Collision insurance, but only for the share of the damage for
which the other driver is responsible. If you have Collision
coverage, either from ICBC or another insurer, Autoplan will pay
the portion of your Collision deductible that the other driver
would be liable for.
What is not covered?
If you don't have Collision coverage,
and you are partly responsible for the crash, you will have to
pay your portion of the repair costs. In the example above, you
would have to pay 25% of the costs. If you have Collision coverage,
it will cover that portion.
