How are my premiums set? - Where you live
If you usually drive where there is a lot
of traffic, you have more chance of being in a crash than you do
if you live in an area where your closest neighbour is five kilometres
away. Some areas have more accidents because of the types of weather
they experience.
ICBC has divided B.C. into territories:
- Lower Mainland
- Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows
- Squamish/Whistler
- Pemberton/Hope
- Fraser Valley
- Thompson/Okanagan
- Kootenays
- Cariboo
- Prince George
- North Coast
- Peace River
- South Vancouver Island & other islands
- Mid-Vancouver Island & Sunshine Coast
- North Vancouver Island
Each territory has its own rate. Just as
with rate classes, the premium for the territory where you drive
reflects your risk of being in a crash.
For vehicles insured for pleasure, to or
from work, or business use, the rate is decided by where your car
stays when it's not in use (usually where you live). For vehicles
used for delivery and most other commercial uses, the rate is set
according to the highest-rated territory where the vehicle is used.
Isolated islands
ICBC has a special low-priced policy for
you if you drive only on an isolated island. It covers islands that
can't be accessed by bridge or regularly scheduled ferry service.
Examples are Protection Island, Gambier Island and Keats Island.
Usually people who live on these islands have had their vehicle
brought there by barge. If you think you might qualify for this
policy, ask your Autoplan
broker.
