When you rent a car, you have to make sure it's insured, too. With RoadsidePlus, you get dependable, convenient and affordable coverage for a rental vehicle.
RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle Coverage protects you when you are using a courtesy vehicle or a vehicle rented under a written rental agreement from an established rental service for a period of up to 30 days, and using it for pleasure or business purposes, including motor homes, motorcycles or trailers. The coverage includes:
Because you have purchased RoadsidePlus, you don't need to buy the same coverages from the rental company. They will generally charge you a much higher premium for coverage that usually does not offer as much protection. If the rental company has collision or comprehensive coverage of its own that applies in addition to your coverage, ICBC will pay the difference between the higher deductible on the rental company's policy and your RoadsidePlus deductible.
Some rental companies may ask for a larger deposit if you don't buy their coverage. If you are arranging for a vehicle before you leave home, you or your travel agent should check that the rental company you choose accepts ICBC RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle Coverage.
Your broker can provide you with a pre-printed card to show the rental agent, with a phone number to call to confirm your coverage.

Liability, Collision, and Comprehensive coverage protect the person named on the rental contract if that person is:
Coverage also extends to any other person named as a permitted driver on the rental contract.
Accident Benefits and UMP will cover any of the above, any other occupants of the vehicle, and members of the household of the named insured and the assigned corporate driver.
RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle Coverage does not cover:
Most states and provinces require motorists to carry Third Party Liability coverage. In these jurisdictions, the insurance carried on the vehicle is "primary," meaning it must be used first to pay for any Third Party Liability claims. If there is not enough insurance on the rental vehicle to pay for the claim, then your coverage under the RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle coverage will be used as excess coverage.
In some U.S. jurisdictions, car rental companies will ask you to sign an agreement making you responsible for Third Party Liability insurance. In this case, the RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle Coverage will provide your primary coverage.
If you own a vehicle that is insured in British Columbia, the Third Party Liability coverage for your vehicle can extend to one that you rent, either on a primary or an excess basis. Some conditions apply to this coverage, and you should discuss them with your Autoplan broker before you rent a vehicle.
In addition, any Third Party Liability claims made against your coverage through your own vehicle will affect your position on the Claim-Rated Scale, and therefore will affect the discount you earn on your premiums. The same claim made under the RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle Coverage will not affect your standing on the Claim-Rated Scale, and so won't affect your future premiums.
Note: If you have a claim under your RoadsidePlus Rental Vehicle Coverage, do not agree to any financial arrangements with the car rental company until you have spoken to your ICBC adjuster.
