24-hour roadside prohibition

If a police officer suspects your ability to drive has been affected by drugs or alcohol, or if an officer asks you to take a breath alcohol test and you refuse, the officer may prohibit you from driving for 24 hours, on the spot.

Surrendering your licence

If you receive a 24-hour roadside prohibition, the police officer will ask for your driver's licence. The police will keep your licence for 24 hours.

Reclaiming your licence

The police officer will give you instructions for reclaiming your licence once the 24 hours have elapsed.

For more information on 24-hour prohibitions visit the publications page of the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles website.
