Red light camera tickets
More than 40 per cent of crashes happen at intersections. To catch aggressive drivers running red lights and help keep our roads safe, traffic cameras are installed at 120 high-risk intersections in B.C. cities.
If you receive a red light camera ticket
Alleged offenders are issued tickets by mail, or sometimes in person.
The registered owner of the photographed vehicle is responsible for the ticket.
If you have received a ticket by mail
Halfway down the ticket on the left side, you'll see a box labelled "Date Violation Ticket Completed." For a mailed ticket, you have 45 days from that date to pay the fine or dispute the ticket.
If paid within 30 days of receiving the ticket, you can pay $25.00 less ($142.00 total).
If you have been personally "served" a ticket
Tickets that aren't paid or disputed within 45 days of the date shown on the ticket are sent to a process serving company. The process serving company then locates and serves-hands over-these tickets to alleged offenders in person. Accepting the ticket shows that you have received it; it doesn't mean you are pleading guilty.
You have 30 days from the time you are personally served the ticket to pay or dispute. If after 30 days you have taken no action, you will be deemed guilty of the offence and owe the government the ticketed amount.
How do I pay the fine?
You can pay in person, by mail or by phone.
What if someone else was driving?
At the time of the red light offence, was someone else was driving your vehicle? If you're the registered owner, you may be able to transfer responsibility for the offence to that person. You do this by "nominating" him or her. Both of you must agree to do this.
How to nominate a driver
The registered vehicle owner and the driver must complete an Application for Driver Nomination. You pick one up at any ICBC Driver Services centre, Government Agent office or ICBC appointed agent's office.
If you were personally served the ticket, you cannot nominate someone else as the driver.
Nomination forms must be correctly filled out, mailed and received by the ICBC Integrated Traffic Camera Unit within 45 days of the date shown on the ticket. Applications not received within 45 days are rejected. Please allow 10 days for mailing.
Mail the application to:

How to dispute a red light camera ticket
See disputing a ticket.
If you've been nominated as the person responsible for the red light offence, you can still dispute your ticket.
Penalty points for red light camera offences
Registered vehicle owners do not receive driver penalty points for red light camera offences.
If a driver is nominated for the offence, he or she will receive three points.
Commercial vehicle owners
If you are the registered owner of a commercial vehicle (taxi, bus, truck etc.) and are convicted of a traffic camera offence, points will be added to your National Safety Code profile.
