Getting an on-highway air brake endorsement
To get an ICBC-approved on-highway air brake endorsement
you must:
- complete an ICBC-approved
air brake course
- complete the air brake endorsement application
form and provide any requested information
- pass the air brake knowledge test
- pass an air brake pre-inspection test
A road test is not required.
Exemption from the training course
You may be exempt from an air brake training course
if you can prove you have sufficient air brake experience. Contact
a driver
licensing office for more information.
An air brake course is highly recommended as even
experienced drivers learn more about air brakes by taking the course.
If you are exempted from the air brake training
course, you'll still need to pass the knowledge test and the air
brake pre-trip inspection test. If you don't pass these tests, you
may have to attend an ICBC-approved course before you attempt any
further tests.

The knowledge test and the pre-trip inspection test
The knowledge and pre-trip inspection tests are
based on Driving Commerical Vehicles, which is available at driver
licensing offices throughout the province. It can also be downloaded
here.
You may need to pay some fees
to take the tests.
You
do not need to make an appointment to take the knowledge test. You
do need an appointment to take the pre-trip inspection test. You
must re-qualify on the knowledge test if you do not add an air brake
endorsement to your licence within one year of passing the knowledge
test. Contact your nearest driver licensing office for more information.
Your test vehicle
You must provide an appropriate
vehiclefor your air brake endorsement
test.
