Testing for a commercial learner's licence
When you apply for a commercial learner's licence,
you must take:
To take the test, go to your nearest driver
licensing office. No appointment is necessary. Bring ID.
Please note that if you are attending an office to take your knowledge test you should arrive at least 1 hour prior to closing time. This time is an estimate only, and depending on customer demand on any given day we may not be able to accommodate all knowledge test requests. You will have a greater opportunity to access one of our testing stations by attending earlier in the day.
The knowledge test
The knowledge test is conducted entirely in English.
You must be able to both speak and write
English without assistance.
All commercial knowledge tests are multiple choice and consist of
35 questions of which 28 need to be answered correctly (80%). All of the
information required to answer the test questions can be found in Driving Commercial
Vehicles. You must also re-qualify on the knowledge test to renew your learner's
licence which is valid for one year.
The road signs test
The road signs test is considered part of the
commercial learner's licence knowledge test.
To prepare for the road signs test, review
the signs shown in Driving
Commercial Vehicles.
The air brake knowledge test
If you are applying for an air brake endorsement,
you must also take an air brake knowledge test. You need to know
the material presented in Chapters 2, 7, 8 and 9 of Driving
Commercial Vehicles to pass this test. (See Air
brake endorsements for details.)
