Getting an International Driving Permit (IDP)

Please note that ICBC does not issue International Driving Permits. The following information is provided for your convenience.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) allows you to drive in most countries outside of Canada.

Check with the country you are planning to visit to ensure that the IDP is accepted.

When using an IDP, you must also carry a driver's licence from your usual place of residence.

Applying for an IDP

To apply for an IDP:

  1. Go to any British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) office.
  2. Complete an application form.
  3. Submit 2 passport photos with your signature.
  4. Pay the $15 permit fee.

The permit is valid for 1 year.
