B.C.'s Enhanced Driver's Licence

Enhanced Driver's Licence | Q&As

Enhanced driver's licence
B.C.'s new Enhanced Driver's Licence

Do you have a B.C. Enhanced Driver’s Licence?

Sept. 30, 2008, is the last day you’ll be able to renew or replace your B.C. Enhanced Driver’s Licence (EDL) until spring 2009.

Letters have been sent to all EDL card holders to remind them of this important date.

Changes at the manufacturing facility for the EDL licences mean that we’ll be unable to issue new or replacement EDLs between Oct. 1, 2008, and spring 2009.

Changing your name, address or licence status? EDL card lost or stolen?

Before Oct. 1, 2008

If you need a name, address or licence status change or if your EDL is lost or stolen, you can apply for a replacement EDL card.

Replacement cards are available only at two driver licensing offices:

To get a replacement card, you will need to bring your  acceptable ID. (See page 5 of the EDL Participant Guide.)

After Sept. 30, 2008

If you need to make any of these changes after Sept. 30, 2008, or if your EDL is lost or stolen, you'll have to surrender your EDL and replace it with a regular driver’s licence. You can do this at any driver licensing office, Service BC Centre or appointed agent in your area.

You can reapply for an EDL when they become available again in spring 2009.

For more details, see page 15 of the EDL Participant Guide.

EDL expiring before April 30, 2009?

Check your EDL expiry date. If your EDL expires between now and April 30, 2009, and you want to keep your EDL, you have until Sept. 30, 2008, to renew it. No new EDLs can be produced between Oct. 1, 2008, and spring 2009.

If you didn’t receive a letter and your EDL expires before April 30, 2009, please call us at 1-800-950-1498.

To renew your EDL, you’ll have to re-qualify at either the Richmond Expressway driver licensing office or Cloverdale Expressway driver licensing office. Check your letter for important details and appointment booking information.

Don’t want to keep your EDL?

You can surrender it and replace it with a regular driver’s licence.

Program planned for expansion in 2009

ICBC is currently testing Canada's first enhanced driver's licence (EDL) with 500 B.C. volunteer drivers. EDL card-holders can use their EDL as a licence to drive and as a valid travel document for entry from Canada into the U.S. by land or water. A passport is still required to enter the U.S. by air.

ICBC, in partnership with the federal and provincial government, will review the test results with the view to expand the program to all Canadian citizens residing in B.C. in Spring 2009. This will include the introduction of an enhanced B.C. Identity Card for Canadian citizens who are non-drivers.

Additional updates on B.C.'s EDL will be posted on icbc.com as they become available.
