ICBC introduces Basic Vehicle Damage coverage

Basic Vehicle Damage coverage launched on May 1, 2021, alongside Enhanced Care, which has saved most drivers an average of 20% on their ICBC basic and optional auto insurance, while ensuring access to better care and recovery benefits for people injured in crashes.

Basic insurance covers up to $200,000 and doesn’t impact your insurance premiums. This coverage limit is enough to repair or replace 99% of vehicles in the province. If purchased, Optional Collision coverage pays for the repair costs that exceed $200,000.

Basic Vehicle Damage coverage highlights include:

Crash responsibility

If another driver is responsible for a crash in B.C., Basic Vehicle Damage coverage covers your repair costs up to the amount you are not responsible for.

If you are partially responsible for a crash, Basic Vehicle Damage coverage provides coverage up to the percentage that the customer is not responsible for the crash.

Out-of-province vehicles

Out-of-province (OOP) plated vehicles don’t carry ICBC Basic insurance. However, OOP insurance companies are required to provide coverage equivalent to Basic Vehicle Damage coverage that willl pay for loss or damage to the OOP-insured Temporary Substitute Moto Vehicle (TSMV) if it’s involved in a crash in B.C. We recommend that service providers renting or lending TSMVs (either in B.C. or out-of-province) ensure that the customer has Optional collision and/or comprehensive coverage to cover vehicle damage and avoid potential claim delays.

Loss of use

Loss of use is included in Basic Vehicle Damage coverage and is not subject to the $200,000 vehicle damage limit.

Towing and storage expenses

Reasonable expenses for towing and storage are covered by ICBC.

Vehicle depreciation

Accelerated depreciation is not covered under Basic Vehicle Damage coverage or any other ICBC coverage. Depreciation may apply to all estimates regardless of crash responsibility. For more information, please see the depreciation policy and items where depreciation applies chart.
