Why we invest in road safety

ICBC invests in programs that prevent crashes, auto crime and fraud, helping to make our roads safe for everyone in British Columbia. Prevention also helps control claims costs and keeps insurance rates low and stable for you.

Car crashes are the number-one killer of youth in B.C. We're out to change this, while continuing to help reduce crashes and injuries.

Individual drivers like you can do a lot to help. The road safety information here explains how.

B.C. road safety statistics

In 2005 in British Columbia, 459 people were killed1 and 78,000 people2 were injured in motor vehicle crashes on our roads.

On a typical day:

This means that there was one car crash approximately every two minutes and someone was injured every seven minutes. This doesn't have to be a typical day. With education, training, prevention programs, road and engineering improvements and more awareness of high-risk activities, we can continue to make things safer for all road users.
