How to raise money
What is fundraising?
By definition, fundraising is raising money for a cause or project. Raising money is often necessary in order to achieve the goals and objectives set by the team. Fundraising also helps your team achieve name and cause recognition in the school and the community.
How do we get started?
- Create a committee
No one can handle fundraising alone so work together to achieve the best possible outcome.
- Develop a goal
Determine what you are raising money for and how much you need to raise. Although the aim of fundraising is to raise the highest amount possible, it's important to set a specific goal.
- Create a list of potential fundraising activities
There are countless fundraising types, styles and ideas. Talk to other student teams or community groups and find out what worked for them and what didn't.
- Compare your list with your situation and goals at the time
Every school and community has different advantages and disadvantages. Take advantage of the "ins" you have and also be aware of constraints that may exist. Get a feel for your community and be creative in choosing fundraising activities that will work best there.
How to fundraise
Sell stuff: You can participate in campaigns offered by companies or sell products of your own. These campaigns are usually quite simple to organize and have the potential to raise a lot of money.
Hold an event: Events are a fun way to raise money but they're not always worth the time and effort. Do a time versus benefit analysis to determine whether an event will have the desired impact and make sure everyone on the team is committed because an event requires a ton of dedication, organization and planning.
Secure sponsorships/donations: This can also be tied in with other fundraisers. For example, ask your local grocery store to donate food for your bake sale. In writing your request letter, specify a preferred donation but mention you'd be grateful for any support. It's also a good idea to inform potential sponsors if there will be any recognition or "Thank you" published in a local newspaper or elsewhere. Make a good impression and show your gratitude! Send personalized thank-you notes and follow up letters to all your supporters.
