Approach

Content focus

Road safety content

Case studies — unexpected situations: how do you deal with them?

Students critically analyze case studies in which young people make decisions without considering all the possible consequences.

  • Impaired driving (alcohol)
  • Car crash consequences
  • Seatbelt use
  • Theft from vehicle
  • Reckless thrill-seeking behaviour
  • Speed

Quiz & scenario analysis — independent travel planning

Quizzes provide the opportunity for students to examine, assess, and sometimes reassess their assumptions. Opinion polling and class discussion allow students to compare their assumptions and opinions and learn from each other as well as the teacher.

  • Responsible road behaviour
  • Safety equipment
  • Choosing proper modes of transportation

Debate — weighing the issues

Students develop debating skills while comparing the costs and benefits of owning a motor vehicle to relying on a bicycle and/or public transit.

  • Responsible road behaviour
  • Costs/risks of vehicle use

Role play — walking in the shoes of another

Students prepare and act out short scenes. Characters are called upon to make health and safety decisions. These decisions are intended to instil responsible road user behaviour.

  • Costs/risks of vehicle use
  • Impaired driving (marijuana)
  • Seatbelt use
  • Driver distractions
  • Impaired driving (over-the-counter medication)
