Passport to Road Safety (K-Grade 3)

Cross-curriculum learning: while most of the activities focus on road safety, each lesson addresses prescribed learning outcomes in Health and Career Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Social Studies, Visual Arts and Drama.
Students complete the 18 activities below, and earn eight stars for their personal passport.

Traffic signs |
- Walk safety signs — identify and interpret signs & signals
- Road safety signs — correctly interpret selected regulatory and warning signs

Buckle-up |
- No flying objects — dangers of loose objects in vehicles
- Buckle-up — adjust and fasten 3-point seatbelts correctly and the importance of using a booster seat

Passenger |
- Vehicle safe — correct procedure for exiting a vehicle
- Vehicle smart — appropriate in-vehicle behaviours, including riding in the back seat until 12 years old
- Bus smart — identify safe passenger behaviours

Bicycle |
- Bike safe — Identify bicycle safety features and reason for each feature. State the reasons for using personal safety equipment. Show how to properly wear a helmet.
- Bike smart — demonstrate shoulder checking & signals
- Cycling rules — demonstrate basic cycling rules of the road

- Scooter, skate & board safe — demonstrate knowledge of the general rules of safety when using a scooter, inline skates or a skateboard
