Chris Lewis (Ancestral Name: Syeta’xtn)

Syeta’xtn, who is also known as Chris Lewis, is the Director of Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation in the President’s Office at Simon Fraser University (SFU). He recently completed his third consecutive four-year term as a member of the Squamish Nation Chiefs and Council.

As a former Spokesperson for the Squamish Nation, Syeta’xtn has proven leadership experience in Rights, Title and Intergovernmental Affairs; Education; Economic Development; Governance; Planning and Capital Projects; and Fisheries and Aquatic resources. Currently, he is focusing on Reconciliation and how we move forward in post-secondary institutions as well as all levels of government.

Syeta’xtn is honored to have served in the boards of the N’chakay Development Corporation, MST Employment and Training Society, and the Coho Society of the North Shore. He was also a founding board member of the MST Development Corporation, just completed a six-year term in SFU’s Board of Governors and was given Board Chair Emeritus recognition. In October 2021, he received the SFU Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award for his inspiring and community-focused leadership to his alma mater. In November 2020, he was recognized by Vancouver Magazine’s Power 50 list for his leadership and influence. Prior to political leadership, Syeta’xtn also worked at the national and provincial level for the British Columbia​ Assembly of First Nations, focusing on First Nations advocacy and policy.

Raised by his grandparents, Syeta’xtn was encouraged to learn the traditional ways of the land as well as further his academic education. Along with traditional teachings, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Planning with a minor in First Nations Studies from SFU.

Syeta’xtn has a passion and talent for sports, and gives back by being a founding board member of the North Shore Indians Lacrosse Society. He also enjoys many outdoor activities with his wife Jennifer, daughter Madison and son William.
